How many times have you passed a place and wondered about its story? The United House-Prayer for All, right here before us, has a fascinating past. Founded not in Philadelphia, but originating from the dreams of a Cape Verdean immigrant named Charles Emmanuel Grace. Bishop Grace, or “Daddy Grace” as his followers affectionately called him, established the first United House of Prayer for All People in 1919. His vision was a church for everyone, regardless of race or background. The United House-Prayer for All People became known for its lively services, often incorporating music and even fire hose baptisms in its early days. This unconventional practice, though controversial, drew attention and contributed to the church’s growth. Today, the United House-Prayer for All continues its mission of inclusivity. It stands as a testament to Bishop Grace’s vision and a vibrant hub for the community.
