Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the spirit of “Sweet Daddy Grace” hovering over the United House of Prayer! This vibrant church we stand before might seem unassuming, but it holds a fascinating history. The United House of Prayer for All People was founded not too far from here, actually. Its founder, Bishop Charles Emmanuel Grace, was a charismatic leader who went by the moniker “Daddy Grace.” He started preaching in the early 20th century. You see, Daddy Grace claimed to be an emissary of God, able to grant salvation. He even adopted the name “Sweet Daddy Grace” later on. His followers flocked to hear his messages, drawn to his energetic preaching style and promises of healing. The key to the church’s success, though, was Daddy Grace’s business acumen. He sold a whole line of “healing-power products,” from soap and toothpaste to coffee and cookies. He even had his own magazine. His entrepreneurial spirit helped the United House of Prayer thrive. Even today, the church boasts a membership of 50,000. Now, take a moment to appreciate the architecture of this United House of Prayer branch. It’s a far cry from the humble beginnings of the church, wouldn’t you say? But the spirit of “Sweet Daddy Grace” and his message of hope and salvation live on within these walls.
