Can you imagine a church built from War bonds? Right here in front of you stands the Algiers United Methodist Church, a testament to faith and resilience. This impressive building, dedicated in March 1922, was erected with the proceeds from bonds purchased by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South during World War I.

Its origins, however, trace back to 1840, when a Presbyterian named Mr. Smiley started a Sunday school in an old plantation house. From humble beginnings, this church, known as the Good Hope Chapel, was chartered by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1847, becoming one of the earliest Christian congregations on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

The first church structure perched near the river bank, but after its relocation to Delaronde and Lavergne Streets in 1857, it was tragically destroyed by a hurricane in 1915. This very spot, where you stand, became the church’s permanent home in 1916. The Colonial Revival style church features a Moller pipe organ and a half basement housing classrooms and meeting space.

The 1883 fire bell, donated by the Ship Carpenters and Caulker’s Union, finds its home in the belfry of the Dr. A.C. King educational building, added in 1955. During a renovation in 1979, the church’s interior received a unique twist. The windows were designed by New Orleans glass artist Milton Pounds, adding a spectacular layer of artistry to the building.

Algiers United Methodist Church, with its 156-year-long history, is a beacon of faith in the Algiers community. It welcomes people from all walks of life, offering a warm and loving space to worship and grow. The church’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of the neighborhood, a tangible reminder of the strength of faith in the face of adversity.
