Picture this. You’re standing before the United Christian Church Detroit a beacon of faith in the heart of the city. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to resilience and community.
The United Christian Church Detroit boasts a rich history. Founded in 1936 by Dr Robert L Jordan Sr it began as Lovett Street Christian Church. It was the first Black Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Detroit. Thirty-five members joined within just four months. Imagine the energy and hope that must have filled those early gatherings.
Initially housed in a rented building on Lovett Street the congregation soon purchased a house on Thirteenth Street. They refurbished it creating a warm welcoming space. In 1939 they changed their name to the United Christian Church of Detroit. They then moved to a larger facility on Sixteenth Street and West Forest in 1946. Dr Jordan served as the pastor until 1973. He passed away in 1998 leaving a lasting legacy on the church.
The church faced periods of transition. Between 1992 and 1995 there was no senior pastor. The Elder Board and church officers kept the congregation focused. Messiah Missionary Baptist Church generously lent associate ministers during this challenging time.
In a monumental move the congregation relocated in 1984. They purchased their current building at 19510 West Chicago Boulevard. Members literally marched into their new home on September 16 1984. A significant milestone was reached on March 23 1994 when the mortgage was fully paid. A celebratory mortgage burning ceremony followed on September 18 1994.
The United Christian Church Detroit is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of worship a symbol of community strength and a testament to unwavering faith. It’s a story of growth perseverance and the enduring spirit of the people who call it their spiritual home. This church has served Detroit for over eighty years. It shows a continuous commitment to serving God and the community. It continues its vital work in Detroit today.
