Gazing upon United Baptist Church, one might wonder about the stories whispered within its walls. United Baptist Church, located at 1254 North 25th Street in Philadelphia, stands as a testament to a rich and vibrant history. First Baptist Church, as it was originally known, was founded in 1698. It started in a humble location, the Barbadoes Storehouse. United Baptist Church congregation eventually moved to a new location at 17th and Sansom Streets. The present structure, a stunning blend of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture, was built in 1900. Throughout the years, United Baptist Church has witnessed remarkable events and hosted influential figures. Reverend Morgan Edwards, instrumental in the founding of Brown University, served as pastor in 1761. Samuel Miles, a Revolutionary War officer and Philadelphia mayor, was a deacon at United Baptist Church. Later, William Staughton, future president of George Washington University, led the congregation. Philanthropist William Bucknell, namesake of Bucknell University, served as a trustee. The church even has a connection to the hymn “He Leadeth Me,” as its lyrics were penned by Joseph H. Gilmore after a prayer meeting at United Baptist Church in 1862. In 2014, facing financial challenges, United Baptist Church sold its building to Liberti Church. However, the congregation continues to worship there under a lease agreement. United Baptist Church, a beacon of faith and resilience, continues to serve its community. It has adapted and persevered through centuries of change.
