Wow What a sight This enormous tire greets you as you enter Detroit. It’s the Uniroyal Tire a landmark bigger than life itself. This isn’t just any tire. This is the largest tire model ever built. Standing 80 feet tall and weighing 12 tons it’s a true marvel of engineering.

Believe it or not this colossal structure began life as a Ferris wheel. It was built for the 1964-65 World’s Fair in New York City. The same architects who designed the Empire State Building designed this incredible Ferris wheel. Over two million people rode it during the fair. Imagine the view from one of those 24 gondolas.

After the fair ended the tire was disassembled. It was shipped to Detroit in 188 separate pieces. Then it was reassembled here. In just four months. It’s now a permanent fixture of the Detroit landscape a testament to Uniroyal’s history.

The Uniroyal Tire has undergone several renovations. In 1994 it got neon lighting and a new hubcap. A giant nail was added in 1998 to advertise Uniroyal’s self-sealing NailGard tire. In 2003 a major renovation included replacing 30 steel beams. The exterior was repainted. Reflective lettering was added. Uniroyal invested nearly one million dollars in this update.

The Uniroyal Tire isn’t just a roadside attraction. It’s a symbol of Detroit’s industrial past. It reflects the city’s automotive heritage. This giant tire is a perfect representation of the creativity and ingenuity that built this city. It’s a legacy that continues to this day. Take a moment to soak in the view of this incredible structure. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget. You can explore more of this impressive tire’s history online.
