The majestic Beaux-Arts architecture of Denver Union Station silently speaks volumes. It whispers tales of a bygone era. An era when trains ruled the West.

Denver Union Station is more than just a train station. It’s a historical landmark. A cultural hub. Opened initially in 1881 it quickly became the heart of Denver’s transportation network. The original structure was a marvel. The tallest building west of the Mississippi at the time. It boasted a towering 180-foot clock tower. Alas this impressive structure met a tragic end in 1894. A devastating fire destroyed its central hall and the iconic clock tower. Undeterred Denver rebuilt.

The current Denver Union Station building that stands before you is the result of two major building phases. The first was a Romanesque Revival-style structure replacing the 1881 building. A larger central portion in the Beaux-Arts style followed in 1914. This upgrade was needed to handle the increasing passenger traffic. In its heyday Denver Union Station served over 80 trains daily. Notable dignitaries like Queen Marie of Romania and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt William Howard Taft and Franklin Delano Roosevelt graced its platforms. The station even had a grand Welcome Arch. It stood proudly in front of the station for many years before being demolished as a traffic hazard in 1931.

The mid-20th century saw a decline in rail travel. Air travel became increasingly popular. Denver Union Station lost passenger traffic to Stapleton International Airport. Yet even through the decline the station never lost its charm. Amtrak became the sole provider of rail service. They operated only two trains daily. This was a stark contrast to the bustling days of the past. However Union Station continued to adapt evolving to maintain its important role in Denver’s transportation network.

In 2014 after a major renovation the Denver Union Station reopened. It is now a vibrant hub. It combines its historic charm with modern amenities. The renovation transformed it into a transit-oriented mixed-use development. The historic station house now houses the elegant Crawford Hotel. There are also many restaurants and retailers. The station connects multiple forms of transport. There are train platforms a large underground bus station and a light rail station. Denver Union Station is a testament to the city’s enduring spirit. It stands as a symbol of progress and renewal. A place where history meets the future. A place that continues to serve Denver and its visitors alike. A true cornerstone of the Mile High City.
