A celestial marvel awaits you. Before you stands the Union Observatory a Johannesburg landmark. Established in 1903 it initially served as a meteorological station. Its purpose soon expanded to include astronomical observation.

This wasn’t just any observatory. It held a special place in history. Its location on Observatory Ridge offered incredible views of the night sky. This is where the clear air and dark skies enabled groundbreaking discoveries.

The Union Observatory wasn’t always called that. It started as the Transvaal Meteorological Department. After the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910 its name changed. It became the Union Observatory in 1912. Later it was renamed the Republic Observatory in 1961.

Robert Innes the observatory’s first director was a key figure. He secured funding and equipment. He also made significant contributions. Using the observatory’s nine-inch telescope he discovered Proxima Centauri. This is the star closest to our Sun. His work on double stars also contributed to the observatory’s fame.

The observatory’s astronomers made a record number of minor planet identifications. A total of 578 minor planets were identified. That’s an impressive achievement for a single observatory. The astronomers who made these discoveries included Harry Wood Cyril Jackson Hendrik van Gent Ernest Johnson Ejnar Hertzsprung Jacobus Bruwer and Joseph Churms.

The Union Observatory’s legacy extends beyond discoveries. It played a vital role in South African science for many decades. The observatory was involved in meteorology timekeeping and telecommunications research. It even made contributions to studies of driver fatigue and rainfall.

Sadly light pollution in Johannesburg caused the observatory’s closure in 1971. The observatory’s buildings still stand as a reminder of its important contributions. They stand as a monument to scientific exploration and discovery. The Union Observatory remains a symbol of Johannesburg’s rich scientific past. It’s a testament to the dedication of the astronomers who worked there. It’s a place where the stars shone brightly on human ingenuity and perseverance.
