How about a journey back to 1865? We stand before the Union Grove Baptist Church Plaque. It marks a site rich with history.
Union Grove Baptist Church began in the Sawyer community. It started with just 27 members. This was a time of rebuilding after the Civil War. These folks sought solace and community.
In 1870, Dougald McAlpine donated three acres of land. This act allowed the church to establish a permanent home. A church building was erected in 1880. The Union Baptist Association even held its annual convention here. Imagine the excitement.
Union Grove Baptist Church played a vital role in forming other associations. Evergreen Baptist Association, Grimes County Association, and Creath Association all benefited. Union Grove hosted Evergreen in 1892. It also hosted the Creath Associations in 1901 and 1910. The church was a hub of activity.
By 1918, the church had reached its peak membership of 134 people. The original structure was rebuilt in 1952. There was a lapse in regular services from 1965 to 1970. Services resumed in 1971.
Union Grove Baptist Church of Whitehall is one of the oldest Baptist churches in Texas. Whitehall was settled in the 1830s and 1840s. It was a stagecoach stop. It connected South Central Texas to Harrisburg. Harrisburg later became Houston. The area was called Wallace’s Prairie. Caleb Wallace was the last colonist granted land by the Spanish. Wallace is buried in the Whitehall-Fairview Cemetery. This cemetery has a long history with Union Grove.
Union Grove Baptist Church is proud of its past. It cherishes its present. The church adheres to basic Baptistic doctrines. Christ died for our sins. Christ rose from the dead. Christ will return for those who believe in Him. The Bible is clear about salvation. Confess Jesus as Lord. Believe God raised Him. You will be saved.
The Baptist Faith and Message of 2000 guides the church. This document descends from the first Baptist Confession of Faith. Thomas Helwys authored it in 1611.
Union Grove practices Believer’s Baptism. Only those old enough to understand faith in Jesus Christ are baptized. Baptism by immersion is the only method used. It is the only type described in the Bible.
The church is independent and self-governing. It supports Texas Baptists’ mission efforts. It also supports international missions.
Today, the Union Grove Baptist Church Plaque stands as a reminder. It signifies faith, community, and perseverance. It represents the enduring spirit.
