Gazing at Union Church of Bay Ridge, one might sense the echoes of two congregations united. This church, standing proudly at 7915 Ridge Boulevard, weaves together a rich tapestry of history and faith. Union Church of Bay Ridge started as two separate entities: a Dutch Reformed Church and a Presbyterian Church. Both laid their cornerstones in 1896. The Dutch Reformed, known as Bay Ridge Reformed Church, stood on the very spot where Union Church exists today. The Presbyterian Church was just a block south. An interesting fact is that the current sanctuary incorporates the front section of the original Dutch Reformed Church. The first pastors, Dr. Charles Scudder of the Dutch Reformed and Dr. Walter R. Ferris of the Presbyterian Church, fostered a warm relationship between their congregations. They recognized a shared vision and faith. This led to a gradual merger, culminating in the union of 1918 within the 80th Street building. Initially, classes were held in unconventional spaces like the kitchen and belfry, due to the lack of a parish house. As Bay Ridge’s population boomed, the congregation expanded, highlighting the need for a dedicated space. In 1924, they embarked on a fundraising mission. Their dedication bore fruit with the construction of the present Union Church of Bay Ridge structure in 1931. A lightning strike in 1937, sadly, destroyed the steeple. The parish house, built in 1931, stands on the former site of the Presbyterian Church. Union Church of Bay Ridge has a legacy of progressive pastors. Dr. John Paul Jones, serving in 1931, was a forward-thinking individual who addressed pressing issues like labor rights and even exchanged pulpits with a minister from Bedford-Stuyvesant and a rabbi. Reverend George Bonnell (1956) brought his theological and scholarly background to his sermons. During his tenure, Margaret Howland became the twelfth woman ordained in the denomination, marking a significant milestone at Union Church. Union Church of Bay Ridge stands as a testament to unity, progressive values, and a vibrant community. Its story echoes the spirit of its founding congregations and the dedicated individuals who shaped its journey.
