Isn’t it amazing that a university could rise from humble beginnings to shape the future of media? Here at the UNIMAC campus, the University of Media, Arts, and Communication in Accra, the story began long ago. The Ghana Institute of Journalism, or GIJ as it was first known, was established on October 16, 1959. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, envisioned a school to train the nation’s journalists.

Initially, it was called the School of Journalism. It was a department within the Accra Technical Institute, now Accra Technical University. Richard McMillan became the first principal and journalism tutor. His contributions were so significant that the university’s library bears his name.

In 1974, the school evolved into the Ghana Institute of Journalism. It wasn’t until 2009 that GIJ received its presidential charter, officially establishing it as a university. Then in 2022, the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI), and the Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL) were merged as a University by an act of Parliament.

UNIMAC-GIJ now has campuses in Ringway, Osu, and North Dzorwulu, all in Accra. The university offers a range of programs. There are diploma programs that offer a two-year course. Bachelor of Arts programs offer a four-year course. The Masters Programs provide a one-year course. Students can specialize in Journalism or Public Relations. They can also study Media Management and Development Communication.

UNIMAC has several faculties and departments. These include the Faculty of Integrated Communication Sciences. There is also the Faculty of Journalism & Media Studies. The Faculty of Public Relations, Advertising & Integrated Marketing is very popular. Furthermore, there is a School of Graduate Studies and Research. Students can even explore alternative learning methods.

Over the years, many leaders have guided this institution. From Richard McMillan to Eric Opoku Mensah, each director and rector has left their mark. They have helped shape UNIMAC into what it is today.

Not all has been smooth sailing at UNIMAC. Like many institutions, it has faced its share of challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a decision to increase facility user fees led to protests. Students felt the move was insensitive to their hardships. The decision was later reversed after social media uproar.

In another instance, students who paid fees late were asked to defer their courses. This sparked further protests. Students felt it was unfair, as they were not aware of the consequences. Some students were even denied access to campus. Eventually, the management allowed the students to register for exams.

In November 2020, UNIMAC offered amnesty to students who had not graduated since 2013. They were given another chance to complete their programs within three years. This act of leniency shows UNIMAC’s commitment to its students success.

Today, UNIMAC stands as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to media and communication education. From its start as a small school, it has grown into a respected university. It continues to shape the future leaders of Ghana’s media landscape.
