This impressive structure houses the University of Augsburg’s Faculty of Law. Its history is deeply intertwined with the university’s own remarkable journey. Founded in 1970 the university initially focused on business and social sciences. It was a reform university a bold experiment in Bavarian higher education.
But Augsburg’s connection to higher learning stretches far further back. Centuries ago Bishop Otto Truchsess von Waldburg established a university in Dillingen an der Donau. This was in 1551 during the Counter-Reformation. The Jesuits oversaw its operation. It lasted until 1803 when secularization ended its tenure.
After World War II there were several attempts to establish a university in Augsburg. These attempts however proved unsuccessful. The 1960s and 70s educational expansion finally led to a breakthrough. The plan for a modern business and social sciences university based on the Anglo-American model was met with enthusiasm. A Swabian University Board of Trustees was formed to support this goal.
This initial vision for a reform-oriented university in Augsburg gradually expanded. It evolved to encompass multiple faculties. The integration of teacher training into universities further strengthened this plan. This integration brought the Augsburg College of Education into the fold. The college’s origins can be traced back through a teacher training institute in Lauingen all the way to Dillingen’s Royal Schoolteacher Seminary of 1824.
The Bavarian State Parliament’s decision to create the university was announced in the fall of 1969. The university officially opened on January 1 1970. The founding law dates back to December 18 1969. Building H the home of the Faculty of Law came later. It represents a significant expansion of the University’s scope beyond its initial focus. This growth reflects not just Augsburg’s renewed commitment to higher education but also broader changes in Bavarian educational policy.
