Returning to Korea in 1945 Lee Ungno shared his expertise as a calligraphy teacher. His artistic horizons expanded when he moved to France. He embraced abstract art. This led him to experiment with innovative pictorial languages in Paris in 1960.

In 1962 Lee Ungno’s abstract collages were showcased in Seoul. Critics lauded his work as a renaissance of traditional Korean painting. His unique approach bridged Eastern and Western art. This revitalized Korean art in the 1960s.

Lee Ungno’s art reached international audiences. His exhibitions spanned Germany the United States and Switzerland. His works are part of prestigious public collections. These include the Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Modern Art in Rome.

In 2018 the Gana Art Gallery in Seoul presented “People”. It was one of Lee Ungno’s solo exhibitions. The Ung Gallery continues to honor Lee Ungno’s legacy. It showcases how he straddled Eastern and Western art.
