This house stands as a testament to the Underwood family’s contributions to Korea. It’s a place where their legacy lives on. The Underwood Memorial House is located on the Yonsei University Sinchon campus in Seoul.
Horace G. Underwood founded Yonsei University. He was a well-known figure in Korea for over three decades. His son, Horace Horton Underwood, built this house in 1927.
For nearly 50 years, the Underwood family called this place home. In 1974, they donated it to Yonsei University. The university decided to use it as a space to honor the Underwood family.
The Underwood Memorial House is tucked away in a quiet spot. It is a scenic nature spot near the main campus.
Inside the house, you’ll find an exhibition spanning two stories. The attic has been converted into a kids’ area. It provides chairs and beanbags for resting.
The Horace Horton Underwood Room recreates his original office. The restoration is based on historical research by Dr. Won Il-Han.
The exhibition showcases artifacts and photos. Detailed explanations tell the history of the Underwood family’s contributions. Their work spanned medicine, education, and public service.
The Underwood Memorial House preserves the family’s residence. It reminds future generations of their story. The interior has been restored to its 1930s appearance.
Additional Underwood family items were added in 2006. These included undisclosed photos, videos, and books. Dr. Won Il Han donated these from his collection. The Underwood Memorial House then featured exhibitions. These exhibits were called \”Underwood’s Life,\” \”Korea and Underwood,\” and the \”Literature Room.\”
The Cultural Heritage Administration recognizes its historical and architectural value. The house helps us examine modern Western housing style. It has a unique architectural form.

In November 2016, a fire caused damage, leading to its closure. But in May 2018, the lost parts were restored. The exhibition room was reorganized and reopened.
You can visit the Underwood Memorial House from Monday to Saturday. The opening hours are 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding public holidays. Entry is free. You can also make reservations for group visits.
