Carved into the landscape before you stands UNDA, a sculpture that whispers secrets of the sea. It’s more than just stone. It’s a one-word poem by artist Ian Hamilton Finlay, placed here on the UCSD campus in 1987. Notice the five limestone blocks. They bear the letters U, N, D, A, and a unique S-shaped symbol. This symbol is an editor’s mark, instructing us to “transpose these letters.” Each block plays with this instruction. The letters shift and change, but always resolve back to UNDA, the Latin word for “wave”. Finlay, though known for sculpture, held the power of language at the heart of his art. UNDA demonstrates this beautifully. The word “wave” rolls through the stones, mimicking the rolling waves of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Look at the tops of the stones. They are carefully aligned with the distant horizon, connecting the sculpture to the vastness of the sea. This connection was intentional. Finlay saw a link between the rhythm of waves and the flow of language. Both possess a certain velocity, a constant motion and change. UNDA isn’t just a static object. It’s a dynamic interplay of words and waves, inviting us to ponder the ebb and flow of language and nature. The limestone itself, a rough-cut English variety called guiting, echoes the color of the coastal cliffs. A few eucalyptus and pine trees frame the sculpture, creating a quiet enclave where you can contemplate UNDA’s poetic message. Finlay collaborated with Sue Finlay and Nicolas Sloan to bring this unique vision to life, marking his first permanent outdoor work in the United States.
