The air hangs heavy with the scent of disinfectant and the faint echo of footsteps. You stand in front of the imposing facade of the UNAH – Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, a building rich with history and a testament to the dedication of Honduran medical professionals. This iconic institution stands on Calle La Salud, a street that itself encapsulates the journey of medical advancement in Honduras.

Established in 1882, the UNAH – Facultad de Ciencias Médicas was the first public institution in Honduras dedicated to training medical professionals. The building has witnessed moments of triumph and adversity, reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare in the country. It has been a sanctuary for learning, a haven for healing, and a source of immense pride for the Honduran people.

Its doors have seen the arrival of pioneers like Dr. Carlos Ernesto Bernhard, the first dean of the faculty, who arrived from Germany to share his knowledge. The institution has also been a catalyst for change; one of its earliest challenges came in 1890 when its students had to abandon their studies to help combat a smallpox epidemic. In 1903, the faculty faced a moment of great injustice when President Manuel Bonilla turned its halls into a makeshift shelter for sick prostitutes.

The student body, who saw this as an act of disrespect, protested. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears, and the faculty remained closed for several years. This period, known as the “Closing of the Faculty,” forced future generations of physicians to seek their education abroad. It was only through the efforts of President Miguel Rafael Dávila Cuéllar and the pressure from the international community that the faculty was able to reopen.

This incident stands as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the UNAH – Facultad de Ciencias Médicas. Despite the turbulent times, the institution persevered, graduating its first female physician, Dr. Martha Raudales Alvarado, in 1947. It stands tall, symbolising the unwavering commitment to academic excellence and the enduring hope for a healthier Honduras. The UNAH – Facultad de Ciencias Médicas continues to be a source of pride for the Honduran people, educating doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who are dedicated to improving the lives of citizens.
