Prepared to be amazed by the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s medical excellence. We are standing before the UMMC Trauma & Emergency Unit. It is a place of healing and hope. It is a vital part of the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. The UMMC’s story began long ago. The UMMC Trauma & Emergency Unit plays a crucial role in this story.
The Universiti Malaya Medical Centre was established in September 1962. It emerged from the vision of a unified Malayan university. This vision was to serve both the Federation of Malaya and Singapore. The seeds were sown after World War II. A commission led by Sir Alexander Carr-Saunders saw the need. King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College should merge. This led to the birth of Universiti Malaya in Singapore on October 8, 1949.
In 1960, the Federation of Malaya aimed to establish its own national university in Kuala Lumpur. Singapore followed suit. By January 1, 1962, Universiti Malaya was permanently located in Kuala Lumpur. The University of Singapore was born from the Singapore Division.
The term “Medical Centre” came into use in 1963. It described the integrated complex. It included the Faculty of Medicine, the Teaching Hospital, and their support services. This definition was formalized in the Hospital Act XXII of 1965.
Although the Faculty of Medicine was established in 1962, the physical construction began later. Dr. T.J. Danaraj, the first Professor of Medicine, spearheaded the project. The first pre-medical students were admitted in May 1963. The Faculty of Medicine officially opened on August 2, 1965. The Deputy Prime Minister, YAB Tun Abdul Razak bin Dato Hussien, laid the Foundation Stone of the University Hospital.
The University Hospital started admitting patients in March 1967. His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agung inaugurated the hospital on August 5, 1968. It was later known as the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in the 1990s. Today, the UMMC operates under the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. Its mission is to provide health services, education, and research. It serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
The UMMC Trauma & Emergency Unit provides immediate care. This includes care for patients with acute illnesses or injuries. The unit also handles emergencies from accidents. It provides care for sudden flare-ups of chronic conditions. Ambulance services are a key component. They ensure patients reach the emergency department quickly. Here, they receive treatment and stabilization. They are then either discharged or transferred to another specialty.
Emergency Medicine’s importance is amplified by population growth. Modernization and globalization also play a role. Traffic accidents and industrial injuries are increasingly common. Infectious diseases are also a concern, especially among older populations. Natural disasters, bioterrorism threats, and conflicts require constant preparedness. All of these factors highlight the need for skilled Emergency Physicians. The Master of Emergency Medicine program at Universiti Malaya addresses this need.
The UMMC stands as a beacon of medical advancement and compassionate care. Its Trauma & Emergency Unit exemplifies this commitment. As we stand here, we recognize the dedication of those who serve. They work tirelessly to save lives and provide comfort in times of crisis. The UMMC Trauma & Emergency Unit is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of hope, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of the community. Remember this vital place as we continue our journey.
