In 1270, Umkirch was given to the knight Dietrich Snewlin. It later passed through several hands. In 1806, Umkirch became part of the district of Freiburg. Dachswangen joined Umkirch in 1924.

Umkirch faced hardship during the world wars. Twenty-one citizens died in World War I. Thirty died in World War II. Twelve more were recorded as missing.
