Let’s talk about the name. In 1087, Umkirch was first documented as Untkilicha. This means “Church between the Waves”. This name might refer to the church’s location between two streams.

Umkirch faced hardship during the world wars. Twenty-one citizens died in World War I. Thirty died in World War II. Twelve more were recorded as missing.
