Have you ever felt the rush of a thousand wings? Welcome to the Umgeni River Bird Park a vibrant jewel nestled in Durban South Africa. This isn’t just any bird park. It’s a story etched in the landscape a testament to human passion and avian resilience.

The Umgeni River Bird Park began life in 1984. It was carved from an old quarry. Dr Alan Abrey a visionary designed and built this haven. A group of bird lovers dreamed of a place to educate others. They brought their passion to life. Their vision blossomed into a spectacular display of feathered friends.

Imagine the 1987 floods. They washed away the road. Birds were temporarily moved to a safer location. Yet the spirit of the park endured. It became a Premier Durban Attraction in 1989. Over 4500 birds representing 400 species graced this place. It was a remarkable feat of conservation.

The park has a rich history. The artwork you see maps illustrations and guides were created by Dr Abrey’s daughter Robyn. She immortalized the beauty of the park. It is a family legacy.

Tsogo Sun purchased the park in 1997. They continued the Inspire to Conserve philosophy. Sadly financial challenges led to closure in 2009. The Regency Foundation stepped in. The City of Durban supported this effort. The park reopened in 2010. This signifies the collective commitment to preserving this treasure.

Today the Umgeni River Bird Park holds over 700 birds from 200 species. Walk winding paths through aviaries. See waterfalls cascading down. Observe the vibrant macaws and elegant cranes. A nursery window offers a peek at how baby birds are hatched and raised.

The Free Flight Bird Show is spectacular. Birds from around the globe soar through an open-air auditorium. Owls cranes hornbills macaws and more take to the sky. This show highlights conservation efforts.

The park actively participates in conservation. They breed endangered species. The wattled crane breeding program is remarkable. These birds are hand-reared and later released. This shows how the park is actively contributing to protecting vulnerable bird species.

The Umgeni River Bird Park isn’t just a collection of birds. It’s a living testament. It’s a story of perseverance dedication and the unwavering love for the natural world. It’s a place where conservation thrives. The birds aren’t just on display they are cared for. They are celebrated. They remind us of the precious balance we must maintain. Enjoy your time here.
