Ultadanga. A name echoing with history. It sits at Kolkata’s edge marking the district’s limit. Once a suburb beyond the Maratha Ditch it’s now a vibrant commercial and residential area. The East India Company acquired Ultadanga in 1758. It was part of Dihi Panchannagram a group of villages. Ultadanga’s name possibly originates from “Ulta Dingi” a place for boat repair.

Imagine the ghats bustling with activity. Small boats dingis were built and mended. The Ganges once flowed nearby shaping Ultadanga’s early life. In 1889 Ultadanga joined Kolkata’s municipal corporation. It became a “fringe area ward” along with Maniktala and Beliaghata.

Today Ultadanga thrives. Shops restaurants and malls line the streets. Banks like HSBC and the State Bank of India have branches here. Mani Square and City Center are nearby shopping destinations. Sony World a major electronics showroom stands at the Ultadanga crossing. The aroma of delicious food from Honey da Dhaba and other restaurants fills the air. Educational institutes including Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya a college affiliated with the University of Calcutta are present here.

Ultadanga’s connectivity is superb. Hudco More a busy crossing connects Ultadanga Main Road VIP Road CIT Road and Bagmari Road. The EM Bypass runs nearby. Buses trams and auto-rickshaws crisscross the area. Bidhannagar Road railway station a bustling hub serves Ultadanga. The Arobindo Setu built in 1974 links Ultadanga and Gouribari. The Ultadanga Flyover opened in 2011 connects the EM Bypass and VIP Road.

Tragedy struck in January 2010 when a fire devastated Basanti Colony. One life was lost and 450 people were left homeless. The government swiftly rebuilt homes providing them free to residents.
