Imagine a town where you can walk along the edge of a maar, an ancient volcanic crater filled with water. You can see the ruins of a castle, a reminder of times gone by. This is Ulmen, a charming town in the Eifel region of Germany. Right in front of us, stands Ulmen Castle, a testament to the town’s rich and turbulent history.

Ulmen Castle, also known as Burg Ulmen or the Ulmener Burgen, is a sprawling complex of buildings, but only remnants remain. The upper castle, the one we’re standing by, survived a number of fires and sieges, yet it was ultimately left in ruins, used as a quarry for building materials. The lower castle completely vanished, leaving only a few foundation walls and a glimpse of its former grandeur.

This castle, though in ruins, whispers tales of a time when knights roamed the land. One knight in particular, Heinrich von Ulmen, went on the Fourth Crusade, a journey to liberate the holy city of Jerusalem. He returned from this epic adventure with a collection of Byzantine treasures, including the famous Limburger Staurothek, a reliquary that holds fragments of the True Cross. It is still on display at the Limburg Cathedral.

Ulmen was a strategic location. From the ridge above the Maar, Ulmen Castle commanded a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley. Its position was vital for controlling the trade routes, and it was a source of power for many centuries. Sadly, in the 17th century, the castle was destroyed by French troops under the rule of Louis XIV, who was known as the Sun King. Despite the devastation, the town, like the phoenix, rose again from the ashes, rebuilt with stones once used to fortify the castle.

Today, Ulmen Castle is a freely accessible town park. As you wander through its ruins, you can almost hear the echoes of knights and kings, the clash of swords during sieges, and the bustle of life in the old days. It’s a place where history comes alive, and where you can truly appreciate the resilience of Ulmen, a town that has stood the test of time and emerged even stronger.
