Is it possible for a bridge to be more than just a connection? The Ukiniwa Bridge might surprise you. Osaka is famous for its many bridges. People once called it “the City of 808 Bridges”. This nickname shows how important bridges were to Osaka.

In the Edo period, other cities had their own numbers. Edo had 808 districts. Kyoto had 808 temples. Osaka’s 808 bridges showed its unique character. It reflected the city’s liveliness.

Osaka became a city of canals. Many bridges crossed these waterways. The Ukiniwa Bridge and others helped the city grow. They supported trade and daily life for centuries.

The number 808 was symbolic. It meant there were many bustling places. Osaka really had about 200 bridges. Edo had more with about 350 bridges.

Osaka was called “Naniwa no Yaoya-bashi”. This means “the City of 808 Bridges”. It was a merchant city. Water transport was very important. Townspeople built and maintained most bridges. The government did not.

In 1701, central Osaka had 136 bridges. Some rulers built bridges for military reasons. Wealthy merchants invested in bridges for their businesses. Townspeople also built bridges to improve their lives.

In 1634, the bridge system changed. Twelve major bridges became public bridges. The government controlled them. The remaining bridges were town bridges. Local people funded and managed them.

Osaka added more bridges as it grew. They built them alongside flood control projects. The number of public bridges stayed limited. This showed how vital water transport was. It also showed the financial strength of Osaka’s merchants.

Edo had about 170 government bridges. This shows the difference between the two cities. Osaka was a city built by its people. Trade fueled its growth. Water transport sustained trade.

Osaka has many canals. Countless town bridges cross them. That is why Osaka earned its special name. The Ukiniwa Bridge stands as a reminder of this history. It connects not just places but also the past and present.
