He spent fifteen years perfecting his technique. He developed “Aosei Sencha Seiho”. This method steamed and hand-rolled tea leaves. It produced a vibrant green tea unlike any before it. This was far superior to the brown teas common then.
Soen’s tea was remarkable. Its superior color aroma and taste quickly gained fame. He traveled to Edo now Tokyo. He partnered with Yamamoto Kahei a renowned tea merchant. Their collaboration launched Ujitawara tea onto the national stage. “Yamamotoyama” became a household name. Soen’s method became the foundation for modern Japanese green tea. Sencha and Gyokuro both owe their existence to his ingenuity.
Ujitawara’s tea industry thrived. The small valley of Yuyadani blossomed. Large wholesale stores appeared. Tea farmers prospered. The area even preserves Soen’s home. You can still see the hoiro the table he used for his groundbreaking process.
