The imposing structure before you is the UiTM Medical Faculty Sungai Buloh Campus. Its design is striking. The main building mimics the shape of a mitochondrion.
This isn’t just any medical school. It’s a cornerstone of Malaysia’s healthcare system. The Faculty of Medicine at UiTM first opened in November 2002. Its initial location was in Petaling Jaya Selangor. The first class of 20 medical students began their studies in June 2003. They graduated in April 2008.
The growth of the faculty was remarkable. The student intake soared to around 250 students annually by 2011. Its early years were spent in temporary quarters. The administration was housed on the 20th floor of a building on the Shah Alam campus. Teaching facilities were shared within an engineering complex. This included a dissection hall and various labs.
The move to Sungai Buloh was a significant step. The new campus completed in 2012. This allowed the consolidation of all administrative and academic operations. Pre-clinical and clinical teaching began immediately at Sungai Buloh. The faculty developed its own clinical services as well. It started with a specialist clinic in Selayang. This expanded into the Clinical Training Centre (CTC). In 2016 this became the UiTM Medical Specialist Centre (PPUiTM). Today it offers a wide range of medical services. It provides cardiology respiratory gastroenterology and many other specialties. The centre has 88 beds three clinic complexes four operating theaters and advanced imaging technology.
The UiTM Medical Faculty Sungai Buloh Campus isn’t only about teaching. It’s a hub for research too. The Institute of Medical Molecular Biotechnology (IMMB) is a key facility. The campus also boasts a state-of-the-art Laboratory Animal Care Unit (LACU). This provides animal husbandry for research purposes. Three residential colleges offer comfortable living facilities for students.
The campus today is a testament to the vision of UiTM. It is a place where education research and clinical care converge. It’s shaping the future of medicine in Malaysia. It plays a vital role in producing highly skilled bumiputera doctors. It is also impacting the local community through its advanced medical services.
