High above Paro Taktsang perched on a cliff Ugyen Tsemo stands. A breathtaking view unfolds before you.

Ugyen Tsemo meaning “Peak of Urgyan” is a significant temple. It holds a special place in Bhutanese history and culture. This temple wasn’t always here. The original structure was built in the 15th century by Uwo Yeshe Bum. He was a spiritual leader whose descendants cared for Taktsang. They maintained the temple until it was given to Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1645.

Tragedy struck in 1951. A devastating fire consumed the old temple. Undeterred the Bhutanese people rebuilt. A new three-storied Zangdogpalri style temple rose from the ashes in 1958. The late Queen Mother Ashi Phuntso Chodron sponsored this incredible reconstruction.

Ugyen Tsemo’s location is challenging. The elements relentlessly batter the temple. Corrugated iron sheeting protects parts of the structure. Despite this harsh environment the interior is stunning. Wonderful images and wall paintings adorn all three floors. These works of art remain remarkably preserved.

From Ugyen Tsemo a path leads down. A forty-five minute descent through a ravine takes you to Shama Lhakhang. Other destinations are also accessible from here. Oselgang and Bumdrag are within reach for those seeking further exploration.

Ugyen Tsemo is more than just a temple. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Bhutan. It is a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Its story continues to inspire. The stunning views alone make the journey worthwhile. The temple’s beauty and cultural significance are undeniable.
