UEP Subang Jaya’s story began in 1984. It was initially proposed as Seafield Jaya. The project was a joint venture. Consolidated Plantations transferred it to United Estates Projects UEP in 1985. By 1988, it adopted its current name. UEP stood for United Estates Projects. Sime Darby owned this property business. The township served as an extension to Subang Jaya. It was developed over 10 to 11 phases within 10 years. It aimed for a population of about 120000. The project included 25000 units of flats, shops, and residential houses. These spanned over 726 hectares. It focused on community building for the middle class.
Awards for earthworks came in April 1988. Construction of the first phase started in August. UEP built 2500 units in the first year. Each phase added 200 units. The first houses sold in June. USJ consists of USJ1 to USJ27.
The late 1990s saw rapid development in USJ. The 1997 economic crisis caused three abandoned high-rise projects. By 2010, these projects were revived and completed. Recent years have brought mixed commercial developments. These cater to the affluent population.
Sime UEP developed almost 80% of USJ. The Subang Jaya City Council has governed USJ since 1997. The first residential communities appeared in the early 1990s. Since then, USJ has grown into 27 sections from USJ 1 to USJ 27. Newer upscale areas include USJ Heights, Subang Heights, and Tropicana Metropark. USJ’s residential areas mainly consist of landed houses. These include terraces, semi-detached houses, and bungalows.
USJ is covered under N31 Subang Jaya in the Selangor State Assembly. Michell Ng of the Democratic Action Party DAP is the State Assemblyman. She took over from Hannah Yeoh in 2018. In Parliament, USJ falls under the P104 Subang constituency. Wong Chen of Parti Keadilan Rakyat PKR is the current Member of Parliament MP. He replaced Loh Gwo Burne in 2013.
USJ has grown rapidly but faces traffic and parking challenges. USJ Taipan also known as USJ 10 and Subang Business Centre USJ 9 are the main commercial hubs. USJ Taipan is the township’s central business area. It is a prominent commercial area in the Klang Valley. Almost all major banks have an office branch there. Wisma TNB and Wisma Conlay are two high-rise office buildings in USJ Taipan.
USJ offers a variety of shopping malls. Da Men, The Summit, Giant, and Mydin are in USJ 1. Da Men and The Summit are prominent landmarks. The Main Place is a shopping mall in USJ 21. One City at USJ 25 is a mixed commercial development. It includes office suites, a shopping mall, a cinema, a hotel, and serviced residences.
Lotus Cars and the Malaysian headquarters of PROTON are located in UEP Industrial Park. Faber-Castell established its Malaysia headquarters in UEP Industrial Park in 1999. The World’s Longest Pencil, Castell 9000, is located here.
USJ is home to many schools from primary to tertiary levels. Sekolah Wawasan school opened in 2002. It is one of only three Vision schools in Malaysia.
USJ offers various medical facilities. Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya and Sunway Medical Centre provide world-class medical facilities.
The Subang Jaya Municipal Council Sports Complex in USJ 5 has a football turf and an athletic running track. They comply with international standards.
USJ is strategically connected to major highways. These include the Federal Highway and the New Klang Valley Expressway NKVE. Public transportation includes buses, taxis, BRT, and LRT trains. The Kelana Jaya Line extension opened in 2016. It connects USJ to Kuala Lumpur and other areas.
