Ever wondered what it felt like to walk the path of kings? Welcome to Udong Mountain Road. This road leads us to Oudong. It was Cambodia’s capital for over two centuries. That was from 1618 until 1866.

Imagine this mountain bustling with royalty. Oudong Mountain Road was the heart of it all. The city radiated from this point. Major development surrounded the busy port at Kampong Loung. It sat on the edge of the Tonle Sap River.

Today, Udong Mountain Road guides us to a sacred place. This mountain features relics from ancient times. It became a royal and Buddhist center in the 17th century. Sixteen stupas grace the mountain. These Chedi hold the remains of kings and royalty. Each stupa boasts a unique style.

Let’s take a short walk up the stairs. Feel the history beneath your feet on Udong Mountain Road. You might want to leave your shoes with the local kids. They will watch them for a small tip. Or carry them. You will need them later.

Our first stop is the Preah Shakyamuni Chedi. This stunning white stupa completed in 2002 is a modern addition. It houses Buddha relics. These relics came from a stupa in Phnom Penh. Thousands of Buddha statues reside here too. This stupa is dedicated to King Norodom Sihanouk.

Now, put your shoes back on. Udong Mountain Road continues. Here, you’ll see two types of stupas. The Chedi Moul is bell-shaped. The Chedi Trong Kreoung has a square base. It features ornate, multi-level designs. The stupa of Preah Ang Doung is especially impressive. Elephants adorn its base. Intricate decorations rise to the top. A spire capped with four faces of Brahma completes the design. Nearby, a prayer hall displays old sema stones. An ancient pedestal sits partly exposed in the ground.

A short walk down and up Udong Mountain Road brings us to Wat Arthaross. This recently restored temple reveals ancient secrets. Notice the reused ancient pillars. The doorframe and decorative lintel tell tales of the past. A giant golden Buddha sits inside.

East of Wat Arthaross, another peak awaits. Udong Mountain Road leads to the Nirvana Buddha of Oudong. This monumental reclining Buddha statue is a highlight. It is fronted by rows of monks and royalty.

As we continue along Udong Mountain Road, consider the history beneath your feet. Oudong was more than just a capital. King Ang Duong built canals, terraces, and bridges here. He also erected hundreds of pagodas. Though some old buildings fell into disrepair, the government is working to restore Oudong.

Remember to dress modestly. The complex is free to visit. Donations are appreciated. Weekdays are less busy than weekends. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon. The weather will be more pleasant then.

Our journey along Udong Mountain Road is almost complete. We’ve seen temples and memorials. We have enjoyed remarkable views from Oudong Mountain. Oudong offers a worthwhile visit. It is perfect for those interested in Cambodia’s history.

As we conclude our walk on Udong Mountain Road, remember Oudong. It flourished as a political, trading, and religious center. Its legacy lives on in these stupas and temples. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and history that surrounds us. Oudong Mountain Road is more than just a path. It is a journey through time.
