Did the motto “Virtute Crescam” resonate within these very walls of Uddingston Grammar School from the start? Uddingston Grammar School first opened its doors in August 1884, right next to the Uddingston railway station. Imagine the hustle and bustle of students arriving by train, their chatter mixing with the steam engine’s hiss. Uddingston Grammar School has served generations of students from Uddingston, Bothwell, Birkenshaw, Tannochside, Viewpark, and even parts of Newton in Cambuslang. The school boasts a rich history, growing from its initial location to a new campus in 2009. The original building, steeped in memories, was transformed into apartments, giving it a new lease on life while preserving a piece of Uddingston’s past. Today, Uddingston Grammar School thrives with over 1,000 pupils and approximately 90 dedicated teachers. The school is divided into seven houses: Arran, Bute, Lewis, Mull, Orkney, Harris, and Skye, each named after a Scottish island. This system replaced the previous five houses named after Scottish rivers: Clyde, Douglas, Kelvin, Dechmont, and Calder. Uddingston Grammar School has also nurtured remarkable individuals who have gone on to achieve great things. From athletes like Aileen McGlynn to Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Gregor Smith, the school’s alumni have made their mark in diverse fields. As you stand before Uddingston Grammar School, consider the countless stories held within its walls. The echoes of laughter, the whispers of late-night study sessions, and the cheers of sporting victories – all contributing to the rich tapestry of this institution’s history.
