Udayan was founded in 1970 by James Stevens. He saw the desperate need of these children and decided to act. He started with just eleven children. Today, Udayan houses up to 300 boys and girls. These children, aged 4 to 18, come from leprosy-affected homes. Some even suffer from the disease themselves. Udayan offers them a haven, a place far removed from the slums and ghettos they often come from.
At Udayan, these children receive more than just shelter. They receive a comprehensive education. Younger children attend the on-site school, Udayan Vidyalaya. Older students attend local schools and are transported by Udayan buses. Udayan even supports further studies with scholarships.
