UCD began in 1854 as the Catholic University of Ireland. John Henry Newman was its first rector. It reformed in 1880. It was chartered in its own right in 1908. The Universities Act of 1997 renamed it. It became “National University of Ireland, Dublin”. A ministerial order in 1998 renamed it again. It became “University College Dublin National University of Ireland, Dublin”.
Originally, UCD was located at St Stephen’s Green and Earlsfort Terrace. All faculties later moved to Belfield. The Belfield campus is six kilometers south of the city center. It spans 133 hectares. In 1991, UCD acquired a second site in Blackrock. This site houses the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
UCD’s economic impact is significant. A 2015 report stated that UCD generates 1.3 billion euros annually. Five Nobel Laureates are among UCD’s alumni and staff. Four Taoiseach and three Irish Presidents are graduates. One President of India also graduated from UCD.
The UCD School of Civil Engineering offers two research-based degrees. These are the Master of Engineering Science and the Doctor of Philosophy. The research programs reflect civil engineering practices.
