Gazing at the Überwasserkirche, can you believe its nickname is “Überwasser,” meaning “over the water”? It’s a nod to its position across the Aa River from Münster Cathedral. The Überwasserkirche, officially St. Marien Überwasser, also goes by Liebfrauenkirche or Liebfrauen-Überwasser. This magnificent Gothic hall church, dedicated to St. Mary, has a history as rich as its architecture. The first Überwasserkirche was consecrated in 1040, a Christmas gift to Münster from King Heinrich III. Imagine the scene: royalty, bishops, and townspeople gathered to witness the birth of this sacred space. This original church was part of a women’s educational institution, a Stift, founded by Bishop Hermann I. This Stift would eventually evolve into the University of Münster, and the “liebe Frau von Überwasser” still graces the university’s seal. Sadly, fire claimed the first church in 1071, and its successor suffered damage in 1121 during an attack by Lothair III. The Überwasserkirche you see today, a three-aisled hall church, began construction in 1340. Its striking steeple, erected between 1363 and 1374, has weathered its own storms, quite literally. Both the steeple spire and the baptismal font were destroyed during the Anabaptist rebellion of 1534-35. The steeple was rebuilt, only to be felled again by a fierce storm in 1704. The Überwasserkirche also served as a final resting place for notable figures, including members of the Droste zu Hülshoff family and Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun. Bernhard Heinrich Overberg, dean and pastor of the church, is buried in the choir. The Überwasserkirche also played a pivotal role in a darker chapter of German history. On July 20, 1941, Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen delivered a powerful sermon here, denouncing the Nazi regime. His words resonated with courage and defiance in a time of oppression. The ravages of World War II did not spare the Überwasserkirche. Bombings left it severely damaged. However, the spirit of Münster prevailed, and the church was meticulously restored, completing in 1968. Further renovations took place in 2016, ensuring the preservation of this architectural treasure. Today, the Überwasserkirche stands as a symbol of resilience and faith, its two organs, installed in 1972 and 1985, filling its hallowed halls with music. It continues to serve as a vibrant parish church, a testament to its enduring legacy in the heart of Münster.
