High above the Ruhr valley stands Überruhr-Holthausen. A place where history whispers through the trees.

Überruhr-Holthausen a small yet significant district of Essen boasts a rich past. Its name itself tells a story. “Überruhr” refers to its elevated position overlooking the Ruhr River. “Holthausen” likely originates from houses nestled within the woods. This once-wooded landscape now shows a mix of old and new. It transformed from a farming community to a mining center and ultimately a residential area.

Imagine the scene in 1054. Holthausen appears for the first time in official records. This tiny village was part of the Rellinghausen women’s convent. Its inhabitants had to use a ferry to reach the church. They were essentially serfs bound to the convent’s land. This changed after 1803. Securilization freed the farmers. The village started growing. Miners arrived drawn by the Ruhr’s coal.

The 17th century brought significant change. Coal mining began. The M?nkhoffsbank colliery opened near the Ruhr’s left bank. Remnants of its stone-built shaft house remain. An old blacksmith’s workshop still stands converted into a home. A horse-drawn railway connected the mine to Holteyer Harbor. This safe harbor for Ruhr river traffic dates from 1837-1838. The Heinrich colliery another significant mine later joined the area.

Around 1860 more building started near the Vereinigte Gewalt colliery. This mine was once the deepest and largest in the Ruhr region. The Heinrich colliery’s winding tower is still a visible landmark. It employed around 3000 people. Mining stopped completely in 1968.

Überruhr-Holthausen’s growth accelerated in the 1950s. High-rise buildings sprouted transforming the village character. These buildings are a sign of the district’s rapid growth. Unfortunately some find them to detract from the beautiful hilly landscape and its scenic views. The area developed a mixed population. You’ll find charming single and double family houses next to these large apartment buildings.

Today Überruhr-Holthausen has about 8400 inhabitants. It presents a contrasting image. The peacefulness of its location is sometimes marred by its high-rise buildings. The district faces modern challenges such as youth unemployment and a lack of leisure activities. Despite that Überruhr-Holthausen enjoys excellent transport links. The B 227 road provides easy access to the A40 and A52 motorways. Essen-Holthausen S-Bahn station connects the area to Haltern am See and Wuppertal. Buses even provide a night service to Essen’s main station.

Überruhr-Holthausen a place where the past meets the present. It’s a district with a multifaceted history. A testament to its evolution from a small farming community to a modern residential district. It’s a place where contrasts blend together offering its own unique charm.
