High above the Ruhr River lies Überruhr-Hinsel a place steeped in history. Its name itself speaks volumes Überruhr meaning “over the Ruhr” a testament to its elevated position on a peninsula overlooking the river.

Überruhr-Hinsel wasn’t always the residential area it is today. Once a collection of farmsteads its landscape transformed dramatically with the rise of coal mining in the 17th century. The Mönkhoffsbank colliery arrived bringing with it workers and a new era of industry. Remnants of this era still stand visible reminders of the area’s industrial past. You can even spot a converted blacksmith’s shop now repurposed as a home.

Imagine the bustling activity the sound of the coal being mined the rhythmic clang of the blacksmith’s hammer. The coal mines played a crucial role in the growth of Überruhr-Hinsel. The largest and deepest mine in the Ruhr region Zeche Vereinigte Gewalt operated here in the mid-19th century. Another significant mine Zeche Heinrich employed about 3000 people. Its impressive winding tower still stands a silent sentinel of a bygone era. The coal mining ended in 1968. The landscape gradually transitioned into the residential area we see today.

But Überruhr-Hinsel’s story stretches far beyond the industrial period. Archaeological finds at Sonderfeld reveal much older settlements. Iron smelting remnants dating back to the late Iron Age (800 BC to the birth of Christ) show that people were working this land long before the miners arrived. Further excavations uncovered a Germanic settlement from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. These discoveries underline the rich history embedded in this neighborhood. The Bruktererhang street even received its name in honor of this ancient tribe.

The name Hinsel itself remains somewhat of a mystery. Some believe it might derive from an old Saxon word indicating a low-lying area with standing water. This certainly fits the character of the low valley area near the river. The first documented mention of Hinsel dates back to 1092 referring to the Hinseler Hof a farmstead that later gave way to a marketplace and shopping center.

Today Überruhr-Hinsel is a blend of old and new. A significant portion of Essen’s water treatment facilities are located here providing clean water to a large population. The modern architecture of St Suitbert’s Church is a stark contrast to the age-old history yet it’s a testament to the area’s ongoing evolution. This modern church built in 1964 and made from experimental shell concrete was added to Essen’s list of protected monuments in 2019.

Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere of Überruhr-Hinsel. It is a place where history whispers through its streets and buildings where the past lives alongside the present. It is a story of industry and tradition resilience and adaptation a legacy that continues to shape this vibrant neighborhood.
