Was this entire university really built on a former heath woodland? Universiti Brunei Darussalam, or UBD for short, might surprise you. Founded in 1985, UBD wasn’t always a bustling hub of knowledge and innovation. It started much smaller with just two faculties and a couple hundred students. Imagine that! Today, UBD stands as a testament to Brunei’s commitment to education. Located in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan, the UBD Administration building you see before you is the nerve center of this prestigious institution. The university is known for its unique GenNEXT program. It emphasizes entrepreneurship, leadership, and environmental awareness. Think of it as a program designed to mold the leaders of tomorrow. It even incorporates a “Discovery Year”. This gives students a chance to learn outside the traditional classroom through internships or community outreach. What’s even cooler? UBD is home to the first IBM Blue Gene supercomputer in Southeast Asia. It’s housed in the UBD IBM Centre, a beacon of research and collaboration between UBD and the tech giant. So, while UBD boasts a relatively short history compared to other universities, it has certainly made its mark. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, all against the backdrop of Brunei’s rich cultural heritage.
