Let me tell you about it. The U.S. Coast Guard Station Hangar, built in 1932, marked a turning point in American history. It was the heart of the first permanent United States Coast Guard Air Station. Imagine the roar of seaplanes taking off and landing, their missions critical to saving lives and protecting our shores. Planes from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hangar at Dinner Key played a vital role in the rescue and evacuation operations following the devastating Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. During World War II, this hangar buzzed with activity as aviators from Dinner Key took to the skies. They patrolled for enemy submarines and provided crucial convoy support. These brave men even conducted daring rescue missions, plucking sailors from merchant ships targeted by the Nazi Kriegsmarine. As the years passed, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hangar continued its service. It was a vital part of the mass Cuban immigration rescue in the 1960s. In fact, by 1965, when operations moved to Opa-locka Airport, the Dinner Key station had become the busiest air-sea rescue facility in the world. The U.S. Coast Guard Station Hangar was repurposed in 1972. The City of Miami bought it and turned it into a gymnasium. It was named in honor of Elizabeth Virrick, a local activist. Initially, the Virrick Gym housed a boxing program for young men but later expanded to include sailing and other water sports. Sadly, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 severely damaged the building.
