Frozen in time. That’s how the Tysk Kanonbatteri fra 2 verdenskrig G4 feels. These imposing concrete structures stand silently in the forest. They are a stark reminder of a time of war and uncertainty.

This is the Tysk Kanonbatteri fra 2 verdenskrig G4. Part of a planned four-gun battery. It was never completed. Construction began in late November 1940. The plan was for four massive 380 mm guns. Imagine the destructive power. These guns were meant to protect Bornholm. They were also meant to defend German interests in the Baltic Sea.

The harsh winter of 1940 caused significant delays. The project was plagued by problems. They couldn’t get enough workers. In February 1941 the German High Command ordered the project stopped. The decision was made to build a similar battery near Danzig instead. So the partially completed foundations of guns three and four remain. They stand as a ghostly testament to unfinished ambitions.

Construction ceased in the summer of 1941. All the machinery and equipment were shipped to Kristiansand in Norway. Another German coastal battery project awaited. The two half-finished bunkers were abandoned. Nature has slowly reclaimed the area. Now trees and undergrowth partially conceal them.

These bunkers are approximately 500 meters northeast of the Dueodde lighthouse. They are a hidden piece of Bornholm’s history. They’re a potent symbol of what might have been. A chilling reminder of a war that left a lasting impact on this beautiful island. The incomplete bunkers offer a glimpse into the past. They stand as silent sentinels of a conflict long gone. A reminder that even the most ambitious plans can be interrupted. Even war plans are not impervious to the forces of nature. The silence here speaks volumes.
