“They fought bravely didn’t they?” I ask you. We stand before the Two Heroines Monument in Phuket. Its imposing presence dominates the roundabout.

This isn’t just a monument. It’s a testament to courage. It tells the story of two sisters. Lady Chan and Lady Mook. They defended Phuket against the Burmese invaders over two centuries ago. Their bravery inspired the islanders. Many were women. They fought alongside the sisters.

Chan and Mook weren’t just noblewomen. Chan was a twice-widowed governor’s wife. Her second husband died just before the invasion. Instead of fleeing she rallied the people. She and Mook were born into a prominent family. They were from Baan Kien Village.

Their actions are legendary. Their story echoes the tale of Joan of Arc. They weren’t just warriors. After the war Chan helped rebuild Phuket. She traded tin. This was unusual for women at that time.

See the small shrine at the monument’s base? People leave offerings. Marigold garlands incense and gold leaf. They pay respect to Ya Chan and Ya Mook. Ya means grandma in Thai. It shows the deep affection and respect the islanders hold for these heroic women. Locals also come to say goodbye and ask for protection before leaving the island. Students often visit before pursuing further education.

Mid-March brings a huge celebration. The Thao Thepkasattri-Thao Sri Suntorn Festival lasts two weeks. There are sports and cultural events. It commemorates their victory.

The monument itself is striking. The sisters are depicted with swords. This shows their bravery. They are forever immortalized in this bustling roundabout. Remember them. Remember their courage. Remember the Two Heroines Monument.
