Why are those two towers topped with gigantic, shimmering diamonds? That, my friends, is Two Commerce Square, a testament to Philadelphia’s architectural ambition. Completed in 1992, Two Commerce Square, along with its twin, One Commerce Square, was a major development in the city’s skyline. Designed by the renowned I.M. Pei & Partners, these 41-story skyscrapers, reaching a height of 565 feet, were part of an office building boom in the late 1980s. Initially, Two Commerce Square was meant to be built after securing a lead tenant. The Consolidated Rail Corporation, seeking to consolidate its offices, became that tenant, leasing a staggering 27 floors. Today, Two Commerce Square is a hub for accounting and consulting firms, with PricewaterhouseCoopers being the largest tenant. Those sparkling diamonds, a unique architectural flourish, continue to intrigue and captivate, much like the city itself.
