Twin Lakes Colorado wasn’t always Twin Lakes. Originally Dayton it thrived as a crucial transportation hub. This was in 1865. The discovery of gold near Aspen in 1879 changed everything. The name shifted to reflect its stunning twin lakes. Goods and people flowed between Leadville and Aspen. This was all thanks to a trail over Independence Pass a challenging toll road.
By 1885 Twin Lakes was praised as a charming mountain resort. The Inter-Laken Hotel opened in 1879. James V Dexter bought it in 1883 renaming it. The resort boasted luxury accommodations. It also featured a log tavern pool hall and impressive outbuildings. These included a 16-stall horse barn with tack room and hayloft. A milk barn ice house granaries and laundry were also part of the resort. A unique six-sided privy with individual stalls still stands today.
The Inter-Laken Hotel thrived for 25 years before being abandoned. The dam built in 1962 to expand water storage threatened the hotel. The buildings were moved to higher ground. Today you can explore the ghost resort by hiking or boat. The Dexter House even has tours available thanks to volunteer restoration efforts.
