Hidden within the Ashanti Region, Twedie isn’t just any town. Twedie holds the prestigious title of district capital of Atwima Kwanwoma. Located a mere 16 kilometers west of the bustling Kumasi, Twedie’s story is one of resilience and legal battles. Twedie’s journey to becoming the district capital wasn’t easy. Originally, in 2007, the town was designated as the capital. However, due to strong opposition from the nearby community of Trede, the government temporarily relocated the capital to Atwima Foase. The people of Twedie, feeling unjustly treated, took the matter to Ghana’s Supreme Court. After a five-year legal battle, the court ruled in Twedie’s favor in May 2012, reinstating it as the rightful capital. The government finally implemented this decision in 2017 with Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2253. This sparked unrest in Atwima Foase, unfortunately leading to tragic loss of life and injuries. Today, Twedie thrives with an economy deeply rooted in agriculture. Over 60% of the working population is involved in farming, primarily using traditional methods. The town’s location in the forest zone, combined with ample arable land and favorable rainfall, allows for the cultivation of various crops. Maize, cassava, vegetables, yam, plantain, and tree crops such as citrus, cocoa, and oil palm flourish here. The proximity to Kumasi provides a ready market for these products, contributing to Twedie’s economic stability. Twedie, with its blend of agricultural richness and a hard-won title, is a testament to the spirit of its people.
