“Nomoshkar Today begins the journey of television in Kolkata” A woman’s voice echoes across the years. Right here before us stands the Doordarshan TV Tower a silent witness to that momentous broadcast in 1975. This isn’t just any tower. It’s a landmark a symbol of Kolkata’s connection to the ever-evolving world of television.

Before DD Bangla became the household name it is today its journey began here. Doordarshan Kendra Kolkata the predecessor to DD Bangla started its broadcasts from this very spot. Initially operating from Akashvani Bhavan the station later found a home in the Radha Film Studio in Tollygunge. Finally in 1986 it settled into its current location in the Golf Green neighbourhood.

The tower itself isn’t just a tall structure. It’s the backbone of Kolkata’s television infrastructure. It facilitated the launch of DD Bangla on August 20 1992. The launch of DD Bangla marked a turning point. It enabled the broadcasting of Bengali language programs on cable and satellite television reaching a wider audience than ever before. Think of the countless hours of entertainment news and information that have been beamed from this very tower.

The tower has also played a role in education. DD Bangla broadcasts educational programs for school children. Imagine the thousands of students who have benefited from these televised classes. The tower’s reach expands beyond Kolkata. It also serves as a broadcast point for Shantiniketan and Jalpaiguri.

This isn’t just about history though. It’s about the present and the future. The tower’s digital transformation in 2001 and the high-definition broadcasts that began in 2013 show its commitment to progress. The Doordarshan TV Tower continues to stand tall. It is a testament to the evolution of technology and television broadcasting in India. It’s a beacon a reminder that this seemingly simple structure is an integral part of Kolkata’s identity. It has silently shaped the lives of generations.

Today we stand here not just looking at a tower but experiencing a piece of history. We are standing at the heart of Kolkata’s television story. A story that continues to be written every day.
