Consider the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. It is a modern marvel that dramatically shortens travel times. This is the Tuyang Overpass story.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is a bridge and tunnel system. It connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan. These major cities are on the Pearl River Delta in China. Think of it as a crucial artery in a bustling region.
This link includes the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel. It also features the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge and Zhongshan Bridge. The starting point is near Bao’an International Airport in Shenzhen. The entire link stretches 49.7 kilometers. It has eight lanes to accommodate heavy traffic.
Imagine reducing a two-hour drive to just 30 minutes. The Tuyang Overpass facilitates exactly that. It allows for speeds of up to 100 km/h.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link opened on June 30, 2024. Its construction cost about US$4.83 billion. It sits about 27 km from the Humen Bridge. It is also about 32 km north of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
Shenzhen had wanted to be part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. A double-Y design was proposed. But China chose a single-Y design in 2004. This excluded Shenzhen. A separate link to Zhongshan was proposed in 2008. Concerns about jeopardizing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge delayed it. It was eventually included in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan.
The project includes a 6.7 km tunnel on the Shenzhen side. There are 19 bridges totaling 43 km. About 15.5 km of the bridge stretches over the sea. The Tuyang Overpass connects the Guangshen Expressway and the Jihe Expressway. It joins these to the Zhongjiang Expressway.
Initially, there were reports of congestion after the opening. Some users faced hours of delays. They even detoured via the Humen Bridge.
In its first month, over 3 million vehicles crossed the link.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link boasts impressive records. It has the largest span for an offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. This measures 1,666 meters. The bridge deck reaches a height of 91 meters. It also provides high navigation clearance for sea vessels.
The link includes advanced safety features. Firefighting and smoke exhaust systems are in place. A team of 14 robots patrols the tunnel. They monitor pipes, cables, and even car accidents. These robots can direct traffic via loudspeakers. They also film scenes to transmit to a control center.
Color-coded lights line the tunnel walls. Green indicates normal conditions. Red signals emergencies. The lights can guide people during evacuations. They change progressively from yellow to green.
So, the next time you cross the Tuyang Overpass. Remember the engineering. Remember the ambition that made it possible.
