“Did you know that Tutenberg was once a vantage point?” Its story is deeply intertwined with the Altonaer Volkspark in Hamburg. Imagine standing here many years ago. You could have admired a panoramic view from this very spot.

Ferdinand Tutenberg was a garden director. He was responsible for the plans. Tutenberg aimed to counterbalance the lack of open and green spaces by creating a park. His vision was innovative. He decided to use only the materials found within the park itself. Tutenberg created a network of paths. These paths meandered through the large wooded area.

The Volkspark’s construction began in 1914. World War I interrupted the work. The Altonaer Volkspark finally opened in 1920. Over the years, the park expanded. A school and a children’s home became part of the park.

Sadly, some features disappeared over time. The artificial paddling lake vanished in 1931. The spring-water swimming pool, opened in 1927, also disappeared. The Bornmoorwiese meadow is also gone. These were sacrificed to build two sports arenas.

The Volkspark is more than recreation. It also serves as a place of education. City leaders created a perennial and rose garden. They also established a school garden. Here, visitors could learn interesting facts about nature. A forest nature trail and a hedge theater added to the park’s appeal.

A small attraction once existed here. It was a model of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Visitors enjoyed seeing it in the Volkspark.

The Hamburg Senate announced plans to redesign the park. The goal was to modernize its use. Changes to the tree population were planned. These plans did not meet with universal approval.

The Altonaer Volkspark covers over 200 hectares. It is the largest park in Hamburg. The terrain is gently hilly. Birkenhöhe is its highest point. Visitors enjoyed a beautiful view from there. In the past, visitors could admire the surroundings from Tutenberg. Today, the trees have grown too tall. The view from Tutenberg is now obstructed.

Northwest of here lies the Dahliengarten. It delights visitors with around 450 different dahlia species.
