Have you ever noticed the way the light filters through the leaves of the trees in the Schwanenteichpark? It casts a dappled shadow across the ground, but the *Turnende Knaben* statue seems to stand illuminated, bathed in a warm glow. This bronze sculpture is something you might easily miss if you’re not looking for it.

The sculpture, a group of three young men, stands tucked away at the edge of the park, near the Kunsthalle in Rostock. It was created by Karl-Heinz Schamal in 1961. It wasn’t always in this tucked-away spot. When it was first unveiled, it stood proudly in the heart of the park, near the Schwanenteich lake.

The three men in bronze, with their bodies taut and reaching, symbolise the strength and vitality of youth. They represent a hopeful future, a future where the boundaries of time and space are irrelevant. The Turnende Knaben statue, however, went through a time of change. When the Schwanenteichpark was redesigned in the 1980s, the statue was displaced to its current location.

The Turnende Knaben statue is a powerful reminder of the importance of art and its enduring presence in our lives. It stands silently, yet speaks volumes, and invites us to reflect on the past, understand the present, and embrace the future with hope.
