Ever wonder where Turkey gets a significant portion of its coal? Here at Turkish Coal Enterprises, or TKI, in Ankara, we stand at the heart of that story. TKI is not just a company; it’s an institution deeply entwined with Turkey’s energy history.

Established in 1957, TKI has roots stretching back even further. These roots include past activities in the Zonguldak Basin. The company officially formed through Law No. 6974. This law detailed the organization of TKI.

For many years, TKI managed mining operations across various key regions. Think of Soma, Tunçbilek, and even extending to areas like Afşin-Elbistan. In the late 1970s, TKI’s mining activities surged. This led to an impressive annual production rate of 60 million tonnes by the early 1990s.

However, times changed. Some operational rights shifted to the Electricity Generation Corporation. Later, privatization efforts in the 2010s saw mines in Kütahya-Seyitömer, Muğla-Yatağan, and Bursa-Orhaneli transition to private hands.

Today, TKI continues as a key player in Turkey’s coal sector. In 2020, the company produced 22 million tonnes of coal. TKI also supports communities by donating around 2 million tonnes of coal to poor families each year.

The company oversees several subsidiary-operated mines. These include the Bursa lignite mine, the Can lignite mine, and the Soma mine. Others are the Tuncbilek mining center, the South Aegean lignite mine, the Ilgin lignite mine, and the Yenikoy lignite mine.

TKI, headquartered here in Ankara, remains committed to its mission. It strives to balance energy needs and community support. From its beginnings to its current operations, Turkish Coal Enterprises has been integral to Turkey’s energy landscape. It has shaped the lives of countless citizens.
