Dive into a world of mammoths. We are at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. This place protects Ice Age paleontological discoveries.

Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument spans 22650 acres. It became a national monument in 2014. The National Park Service administers it.

Here in Tule Springs, fossils whisper tales of a different time. Imagine spring-fed oases. Picture plentiful water. Think of large animals now extinct.

Paleontology studies began here in 1933. Quarry workers unearthed Columbian mammoth bones. These fossils are between 7000 and 250000 years old.

Tule Springs held one of the largest fossil troves. It had diverse Late Pleistocene fossils. These fossils came from the American Southwest. Megafauna once roamed here. They sought water and food.

Imagine bison with six-foot horns. Think of big cats and camels. Picture horses and Columbian mammoths. Consider ground sloths the size of small cars.

Scientists found a small obsidian flake here. It was near a camel fossil. This flake meant an early stone toolmaker was in North America.

The “Big Dig” in 1962-63 carved giant trenches. Scientists studied sediment layers in detail. They dated fossils and artifacts.

Artifacts appeared only in the youngest layers. These layers lacked Ice Age animal fossils. The toolmaker likely didn’t live alongside the extinct camel. Both sought the valley’s abundant water.

The Tudinu or Desert People lived here by 1100. They were ancestors of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. They hunted and gathered. They used natural springs.

Spanish explorers named this area Las Vegas or The Meadows in the 1800s. Springs dotted the valley back then. Groundwater pumping dried them up in the 1940s.

Tule Springs has two temporary trails. The Tule Springs loop is 1.7 miles. The Tule Springs long loop is 2.3 miles.

Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument is the first of its kind. It is dedicated to preserving Ice Age fossils. It also provides public education. Furthermore it promotes scientific study.

The Upper Las Vegas Wash runs through the park. During the Pleistocene Epoch, a vast wetland ecosystem thrived here.

Today Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument protects this ancient world. It links our past to the present and future.
