The college aimed to combat these deadly diseases. Today, standing before its iconic Uptown campus on St. Charles Avenue, it’s hard to imagine those early days. But Tulane University carries its history with it. The university transitioned from a public institution to a private one in 1884, thanks to a generous donation from Paul Tulane. He wanted to foster intellectual and moral education in the city he loved. This transformation allowed Tulane University to flourish. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, part of Tulane University, was the first coordinate college for women in the US? A model for other prestigious institutions. Tulane University has also faced its share of adversity. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 brought immense devastation. The university was submerged, with the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library under eight feet of water. Yet, with remarkable determination, the library reopened just four months later. Tulane University’s resilience shines through, a testament to its enduring spirit. Even the Super Bowl played a role in its history! The coldest Super Bowl on record, at a chilling 39 degrees, was held in Tulane Stadium in 1972. From chocolate toothpaste invented by a Tulane alum to Jerry Springer’s political science degree, Tulane University boasts a colorful tapestry of stories.
