Established in 1963 by President Cemal Gürsel, the TÜBİTAK Başkanlık Binası in Ankara stands as a testament to Turkey’s commitment to science and technology. Initially envisioned as an advisory body to the Ministry of Defense, TÜBİTAK, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, quickly evolved into a driving force behind the nation’s scientific endeavors. This building, the TÜBİTAK Başkanlık Binası, became the hub for this ambitious undertaking. Gürsel, recognizing the importance of scientific advancement for a modernizing Turkey, expanded the initial council’s scope. He established TÜBİTAK with the mandate to shape national science and technology policies. The organization’s first chairman, Cahit Arf, appointed on December 26, 1963, laid the foundation for TÜBİTAK’s future success. The TÜBİTAK Başkanlık Binası became the center of operations for a diverse range of research initiatives. Early on, TÜBİTAK focused on supporting basic and applied academic research. They provided incentives for young researchers, especially in the natural sciences. Over time, its mission expanded to encompass a wider array of scientific disciplines. Today, TÜBİTAK manages numerous research institutes and centers across Turkey. These institutes cover fields like energy, food science, chemical technology, environmental research, materials science, earth and marine sciences, genetic engineering, biotechnology, advanced technologies, and more. The TÜBİTAK Başkanlık Binası coordinates these diverse research efforts. TÜBİTAK also plays a crucial role in fostering international scientific collaboration. It represents Turkey in organizations like the European Science Foundation and participates in the European Union Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development. TÜBİTAK also publishes numerous scientific journals, disseminating research findings to a global audience. Beyond its research activities, TÜBİTAK is deeply involved in science education and outreach. It publishes popular science magazines, organizes science competitions for students, and offers scholarships to encourage young people to pursue careers in science. The TÜBİTAK Başkanlık Binası, therefore, symbolizes not just scientific research but also the cultivation of a scientific culture in Turkey.
