Did you know Tudor Fieldhouse was once called Rice Gymnasium? Step onto the Rice University campus and stand before Tudor Fieldhouse a magnificent multi-purpose arena. This isn’t just any building. It’s a place steeped in history and brimming with exciting stories.
Originally constructed in 1950 Tudor Fieldhouse served as the home court for Rice Owls basketball volleyball and even swim teams. Imagine those early games the energy the excitement. Can you picture it? The building was initially known as Autry Court. It was named in honor of Mrs James L Autry a devoted Rice supporter. Her husband was a descendant of a hero from the Battle of the Alamo. Her daughter made a significant donation to the building fund.
For many years Tudor Fieldhouse lacked air conditioning. Students nicknamed it the Jungle Gym because of the stifling heat inside. It wasn’t until 1991 that an air conditioning system was finally added. This transformed the arena making it much more comfortable for players and spectators alike.
But the story of Tudor Fieldhouse doesn’t stop there. In 2007 a remarkable transformation began. A $23 million renovation project was announced. This significant undertaking was spearheaded by Rice University alum Bobby Tudor. His generous multimillion-dollar donation made this renovation possible. The facility was renamed in his honor.
The renovated Tudor Fieldhouse now boasts a new ceiling new lighting and a new scoreboard. Its seating capacity increased to 5208. It is home to the Rice Owls men’s and women’s basketball teams. The volleyball team also plays here. The court inside is still known as Autry Court a lasting tribute to Mrs Autry and her family’s legacy.
Many colleges consider the blue curtain on one side of the court a distraction. It’s a fun fact that few know. After each game young fans are invited onto the court. They have the opportunity to shoot a free throw. If they make it they win a basketball.
