The building itself is a testament to early Renaissance architecture. It wasn’t meant to be a permanent residence. The Tuchers preferred their main residence elsewhere. Sadly war brought destruction. During World War II the Tucherschloss suffered devastating damage. It was almost completely burned down. However the art treasures inside were salvaged. They found a temporary home at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. Then in 1964 reconstruction began. This was largely thanks to the banker Dr Hans Christoph von Tucher. He dedicated himself to restoring this architectural gem. Unfortunately he did not live to see its reopening in 1969.
Today the Tucherschloss stands as a museum. It offers a glimpse into the lives of Nuremberg’s patrician class. The museum showcases exquisite works of art. These were owned by the Tuchers and are now on loan from the Tucher Kulturstiftung. Visitors can see stunning furniture paintings and gilded glass. They also get to see an 8-piece dinner service designed by the renowned Wenzel Jamnitzer. The Hirsvogelsaal a reconstructed Renaissance hall is another highlight.
